SLPA unveils incentive for importers

Business people who clear their containers of imported goods will be charged no fees for demurrage, the Sierra Leone Ports Authority (SLPA) said Monday. Abu Bangura, the SLPA Managing Director, said the move is part of effort to encourage business people to increase their imports into the country. But other sources say the move is also meant to encourage quicker clearing and reduce congestion in the port. The French logistics company Bollore runs the Freetown container terminal. Bangura said the new policy was reached with agreement of Bollore. Through this, he said, they had already wooed in Netherlands-based company which had shown interest in importing rice and sugars. Bollore recently brought in a new crane as part of its effort to decongest the terminal.
